At Makana Photography, I’ve spent a lot of time working with businesses, helping them create everything from headshots to product photos for websites and marketing. But even though my focus has shifted to commercial work, I still absolutely love taking family and children's portraits when I can sneak in a session. There's something so special about those moments!
I started my photography journey with a love for photographing kids, families, and pets. Over time, I’ve found myself busier than ever with headshots and branding shoots, but every now and then, I carve out a little time to work with families again. And I have to say—there’s nothing quite like it!
A Special Place for Family Portraits
My studio in Carthage, NC, is perfect for these kinds of sessions. I have a gorgeous, all-white room that’s ideal for creating clean, minimalist portraits. It’s one of my favorite setups because it keeps the focus completely on the subject—whether it’s a curious toddler or a sweet newborn. The simplicity of the white backdrop really lets their personality shine through in a timeless way. And the best- my studio is just minutes away from Pinehurst, Southern Pines and only a short drive from Aberdeen.
A Recent Milestone Session: Jennifer’s Family
One of my recent sessions was especially meaningful for me. Jennifer, who I originally worked with for a headshot and branding session, reached out for a milestone shoot for her 6-month-old daughter. I was so excited to reconnect with her and her growing family!
We started with some adorable sitter portraits of her baby girl in the all-white room, and I absolutely loved how those turned out. There’s something magical about that space—it really makes the child the star of the show. After that, we did some sibling photos with her son (who’s almost three), and wow—he was full of personality and energy! We wrapped up the session with some family portraits in my lifestyle room, where we could capture the family just hanging out and enjoying each other’s company.
Why I Love the White Room Setup
The best thing about my all-white room is how it makes everything feel fresh, clean, and timeless. It allows me to capture every little detail, expression, and gesture—without anything distracting from the subject. It's the perfect way to photograph a baby’s milestone or a child's personality, and it always brings out the best in them.
